So the Governor has gotten on board with the cigarette tax hike, which means that he’s coming to terms, publicly or not, with the fact that the gaming bill is not happening (update:  publicly in the 6th paragraph).  It was a matter of time anyway once he put it in the hands of Jody Richards, but Rep. Stumbo proposing yesterday to allow slots, only, at racetracks, only, was the last straw.

Of course, now that the Guv is beginning to come to terms with the loss of his bill, perhaps he’ll actually stand up and show some leadership–the initial signs are good– and get out of this budget crisis without having to cut services thew way he’s been posturing about.  I don’t think he realized that nobody cared that legal aid and education were getting pillaged to make room for casino gaming; now he’s going to have to make the case for that big cigarette tax on his own, in Kentucky.  I hope he knows what he’s doing.
